Domain tools will help you understand some basic information about domains you research. Understanding the age of a domain can be an important clue in determining how it might rank in the engines. And while age isn’t the only factor, it does play an important role in building trust with the search engines.

Some of these tools will help you understand how to find the owner of a domain. Some will help you learn how to find domains you might be interested in and even where to buy them. Some can even give a clue as to the value of a domain.

Domains these days often fall into three general categories.

Category one is your normal, standard brand or business name. These are domains that typically only businesses should have, because they are the actual name of that business or a registered brand name.

Category two is words that are essentially made up. Looking for a famous example? Google. Before there was Google, the word didn’t exist. Today, it is a brand unto itself. Microsoft is another. Anyone can make up a word and build it into a brand, but be warned – it takes a lot of time, money and work.

Category three is the “keyword rich” domain. Basically, these are domains which contain keywords. They can be one or more words in length, but due to their keyword inclusive nature, are favorites of the optimization crowd. Keywords in a domain are a strong clue to the search engines as to the topic the domain is focused on.

With these domain tools, you should be able to learn everything you need to know about a domain you’re interested in.
